About the CARE Centre
With
counselling, guidance and modern reproductive technology,
the Centre for Assisted Reproduction and Embryology (CARE
Centre) brings hope to infertile couples. Since
inception in 1994, the CARE Centre has helped over 200
couples successfully conceive and give life to healthy
babies.
Is infertility a
common problem?
In
South Africa, as many as one in six couples at reproductive
age are affected by infertility, which is usually defined as
the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected
sexual intercourse.
How does the CARE
Centre approach the treatment of infertility?
At
initial consultation, the couple is fully assessed to
determine the most appropriate investigation and treatment,
their history is noted and a full physical examination is
done.
Preliminary
tests include :

Papsmear

Full
semen assessment

Full
hormone profile for both partners

Ultrasound
for assessment of ovarian and uterine functions

Laparoscopy
- examination of the pelvic organs using a telescope

Hysteroscopy
- examination of the womb cavity using a telescope

Hysterosalpingogram(HSG)
- X-ray of tubes and womb
Other
investigations may include post coital and cervical
hostility tests.
