About the CARE Centre

With counselling, guidance and modern reproductive technology, the Centre for Assisted Reproduction and Embryology (CARE Centre) brings hope to infertile couples.  Since inception in 1994, the CARE Centre has helped over 200 couples successfully conceive and give life to healthy babies.

Is infertility a common problem?

In South Africa, as many as one in six couples at reproductive age are affected by infertility, which is usually defined as the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse.

How does the CARE Centre approach the treatment of infertility?

At initial consultation, the couple is fully assessed to determine the most appropriate investigation and treatment, their history is noted and a full physical examination is done.

Preliminary tests include :

  • Papsmear

  • Full semen assessment

  • Full hormone profile for both partners

  • Ultrasound for assessment of ovarian and uterine functions

  • Laparoscopy - examination of the pelvic organs using a telescope

  • Hysteroscopy - examination of the womb cavity using a telescope

  • Hysterosalpingogram(HSG) - X-ray of tubes and womb

Other investigations may include post coital and cervical hostility tests.
